Dinosaur Feathers on SPIN.com

Just last week, we played what has to be one of our favorite shows ever at the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh. As if not's that enough, SPIN Magazine was there and noted the shows as one of the 8 Best Moments of the entire festival. We're flattered...

SPIN's 8 Best Moments of the Hopscotch Music Festival

"Brooklyn's Dinosaur Feathers are plenty fun to listen to, but even more fun to watch. Between the mohawked drummer, left-handed bassist rocking a Hofner (just like Beatle Paul McCartney), and bespectacled Stewart Copeland look-alike on keyboards, they offer up a spectrum-ranging study in visual contrasts. Playing on borrowed gear at Kings Barcade on Thursday, they took the skittery rhythms of Vampire Weekend and rocked 'em up.
Their songs bounced back and forth between ambling groove and jittery sprint, featuring drums that verged on wildly overplayed. But it was cool, and the band dug the crowd as much as the crowd dug the band. "It's pretty cool for you to be here right when we started to play," guitarist Greg Sullo said. "We love you, Raleigh! We'll be back in October!" You could tell the crowd marked their mental calendars."

Don't Rent from HERTZ

I thought a Hertz Donut was when you twisted someone's nose. Apparently it actually involves renting from Hertz. A few months back, my parents rented a car from Hertz while on vacation. They got rear-ended in their rental car a few days later.

I figured this would be a pretty simple case. You get rear-ended, the person who hit you is responsible. Pretty cut and dry. Well, not when you rent from Hertz. They charged my parents for the damages and once Hertz got paid, they did nothing to pursue the guy responsible for the accident, even though my parents got all his insurance information and sent it to Hertz. Is this taking care of your customers? Not exactly. Is this doing what's right? Not exactly.

In addition to Hertz clearly being lazy and greedy, they won't even provide my parents with an itemized bill for the repairs, which they need in order to dispute the charge. I guess, once Hertz got their money, they didn't think it was necessary to take care of their customers.

How does this apply to Dinosaur Feathers? Well, for one - it's my parents. And two, as our fellow bands know, things happen on the road. We have been forced to get a rental in the past because of car problems. So fellow bands - if you're in that difficult place in the future - DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ. They will not take care of you if something goes wrong. Hurts, don't it?

If someone from Hertz happens to read this and wants to actually fix the problem, email dinosaurfeathersmusic@gmail.com and I can put you in touch with my parents. If Hertz decides to make things right, I'd even re-issue this post with an apology and perhaps even an endorsement. Until then, they won't see our business.

Oh Canada!

Every time we start a new tour, we resolve to keep people posted and every time, we fail. This is an attempt to make things different this time!

Yesterday, we made the perilous trip over the US-Canada border somewhere between North Dakota and Saskatchewan. It was one of the few stops we made on the 12 hour journey from Devils Lake, North Dakota to Medicine Hat, Alberta. It is truly big sky country out here and we watched some crazy storms. Luckily, with crazy storms and sunny skies come rainbows...

In just a bit, we'll be heading off to Calgary for the Sled Island Festival. We're excited about our shows and thankful that we found a place to stay!

If you haven't had the chance to check out our new single "Please, Please George" - there are still some free downloads available at our Bandcamp page.

Tracking Finished

After three days of work and a solid 20 hours of tracking, we have finished laying down the drums, bass and rhythm guitar for the album. Tomorrow, the fun part begins, as we get to start turning the recordings into songs and really start experimenting within the framework we have set for ourselves.

Stepping Into New, Improved

After a week of rehearsing and shows in Oakland and Santa Cruz over the last weekend, we finally got into the studio this morning. We spent the first half of the day trying out different amps, setting up the drums and getting all the sounds we were looking for. And after lunch, we finally got to the fun part. Although, six hours later, it was a little less fun and we were a lot more tired.

Some cell phone pics...

Three Days. Three Thousand Miles. California.

Once you pass forty hours in a car in the span of three days, you start to go a little stir crazy. Actually, you may start to go a little stir crazy before that. It's also pretty incredible to go from one coast to the other in a manner of days. Driving through Wyoming in the winter is like driving through the clouds, with snow swirling across the highway. The Great Salt Lake was so covered in fog that we barely saw it.

Wyoming:

There's also a lot of time to pass in the car, which we did with an audio book I'm not allowed to mention and a lot of music. Notable albums include:

Mission of Burma - The Obliterati
The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic
Paul McCartney - Ram
Husker Du - New Day Rising
Paul Simon - Paul Simon
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
David Byrne - Grown Backwards
The Kinks - Muswell Hilbillies
Queen - A Day at the Races

Happy 2011 - So Much To Do!

2010 was a great year for us and we'd be remiss not to thank all the people who helped us along the way. We've crashed on more couches and floors than we can count while on tour and we've been lucky enough to get to share our music with people all over the country.

Now, 2011 is here and we're ready to start making a new album. Tomorrow, we hit the road for Oakland, CA where we'll be working with producer Eli Crews at his New, Improved Studios. It's going to be a long drive, but once we put on the smooth sounds of Roy Dotrice, we'll be in sunny California before we know it.
